Contemporary Technique

Class begins calmly by awakening awareness to breath and gravity through continuous floor. You move swiftly from one exploration to the next, and class concludes with choreography ranging from low-sprawling lunges to large, lofty jumps. In a class that synthesizes Tammy’s classical modern training with somatics and improvisation practices, students are challenged to access their animal-body through luscious, athletic movement.

  • Masterclass (1-2 hour class)

  • Workshop (2-4 hours)

  • Long-Session Course (3-8 week session)

Improvisation/
Contact Improvisation

This class investigates concepts integral to post-modern dance notions of movement improvisation—falling, sensory engagement, weight, momentum, scored and scoring improvisations, developing personal practices, and addressing the non-western roots of these concepts. Students will explore solo dancing, duet work, ensemble scores, compositional improvisation, and references to Nancy Stark Smith’s Underscore.

The content in this course can be designed for all experience levels.

  • Masterclass (1.5 - 2 hour class)

  • Workshop (2-5 hours)

  • Long-Session Course (3-8 week session)

Choreography

Beginning and Intermediate classes introduce students to a range of concepts and strategies to make their own choreography, while advanced classes work with experienced makers to expand their concepts of choreographic practices and making meaning in their work.

  • Masterclass (1-1.5/2 hour class)

  • Workshop (2-4 hours)

  • Long-Session Course (3-8 week session)

Repertory

(also see Repertory for Students)

Classes begin with short warm-up exercises based in improvisation and sensation to prepare students for the themes of Carrasco's repertory. Students view excerpts of her work, and learn segments of choreographed material. In order to give students exposure to Carrasco's creative process, students may make their own choreography with accessible movement prompts, works with students in a similar capacity to how she collaboratively generates material with cast members. Depending on the class format, students may informally or formally present the work at the conclusion of the class.

  • Masterclass (1-1.5/2 hour class)

  • Workshop (2-4 hours)

  • Long-Session Course (3-8 week session)
