TECHNIQUE
CONTEMPORARY MODERN
SOMATIC BALLET | Class follows traditional ballet technique class structure and invites inclusive perspectives on the body, mind, and wholistic wellness. Students will explore how their unique anatomy meets the practice of ballet, and will be invited to move expansively in coordination with their breath and a mobile spine, all in an effort to locate sensations of agency, freedom, prowess, and reclamation.
IMPROVISATION/CONTACT IMPROVISATION
This class investigates concepts integral to post-modern dance notions of movement improvisation—falling, sensory engagement, weight, momentum, scored and scoring improvisations, and developing personal practices. Students will explore solo dancing, duet work, ensemble scores, compositional improvisation, and references to Nancy Stark Smith’s “Underscore.”
The content in this course can be designed for all experience levels.
CHOREOGRAPHY / COMPOSITION
Beginning and Intermediate classes introduce students to a range of concepts and strategies to make their own choreography. Students are led through compositional activities that challenge assumptions about what dance is, how to learn about creative practice through studying different art forms, and working in small groups. Advanced classes work to expand concepts of choreographic practices and making meaning in dance.

REPERTORY
Classes begin with short warm-up exercises based in improvisation and sensation to prepare students for the themes of Carrasco's repertory. Students view excerpts of her work, learn segments of choreographed material, or engage in new a choreographic process. In order to give students exposure to Carrasco's professional creative process, students may make their own choreography with accessible movement prompts, collaboratively generate material, or set her own movement. Depending on the class format, students may informally or formally present the work at the conclusion of the course.
